So I decided to revisit the Sinking City game trailer that I did a a redesign for. The reason I decided to do this was because I sent my trailer to a triple A game audio sound designer. I wanted to know his thoughts on the trailer so that I could not only further enhance the trailer more so but learn more techniques and enhance my skillset. The advice I got was to focus more so on the ambiences as to blend the camera shots as opposed to the jump cutting of sounds. I also focussed on some time based effects to really sell the idea of a sound encapsulating the area it resides in. It's important to focus on the sound from the characters perspective and not so much the perspective of the camera and this is something I can keep in consideration for the future. Further advice was to record more of the clothes foley for the game and implement this, as it seemed to tie everything together. I did record this foley previously but it did not seem to fit, although recording it this time did so. I recorded a mixture of 3 separate takes using a leather jacket and a shirt, which is similar to what the character is wearing in the game. The difference of actually wearing the clothes as opposed to sitting there and rubbing the different materials together is subtly different but I think noticeably better (although my torsos thoughts on the tightness of my girlfriends leather jacket would say otherwise). I recorded this foley using a Rode NT5 running through a focus rite 2i2 interface, this alongside a quiet recording environment seemed appropriate for what was needed. Using a dedicated foley room for this recording was very suitable for this, due to the high gain on the pre amp. I have cut, edited and cleaned up these sounds to fit suitably into the mix of the trailer and my trailer has been updated on the website if anyone wishes to watch the updated trailer. The only thing I feel is missing from the trailer is more compositional music to go alongside the sound effects. Although, I feel this would take something away from the sound design so I have decided to leave the trailer where it is for now, but may come back to it in the future.
Ofcourse with anything that you want to do great, there has to be some sacrifice involved to make it happen. I hope this will amuse anyone who watches my attempt to capture leather jacket sounds with a leather jacket that is way too small for me.
