I thought it would be good to make a start on foley recording for the game trailer Sinking City. I decided it would be appropriate to use the Neumann U87, whilst being a condenser mic with a bigger diaphragm, it allows me to capture more frequencies in the low end due to its sensitivity, and bigger diaphragm. I thought this would contrast well with the Neumann KM184, that may add some nice high end to the mix. After unsuccessfully trying to replicate footsteps wearing my own trainers, and using those provided, I decided to bring in my own footwear that seemed to match those depicted on screen. It seemed to work pretty well and given the different environments we are able to record in the foley room, they seemed suitable. There are two distinctive areas in the trailer that require different environments, one being concrete as the trailer takes place a lot outside in the streets, and one being wooden floorboards where the character enters the house, both of which I was able to record at the facilities in Futureworks.

There is a slight issue when recording foley and that I should mention, and that is the bleed that you get when recording. due to setting up a foldback through from the mixing room, I didn't want this to be picked up by the microphones, a pair of Sony MDR 7506 helped reduce any bleed from the headphones whilst recording allowing for a cleaner capture.

The next step will be to edit the recordings and ensure that it is better representative of the picture, and therefore more believable.
